HoliSoils sheds light on GHG emissions in peatlands at INTECOL Conference 2025

The 12th INTECOL Wetlands Conference took place together with the 20th Annual Meeting of SWS Europe from 29 June to 4 July 2025 in Tartu, Estonia. The event aimed to advance wetland management by promoting the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and experiences among researchers, practitioners, and policymakers from across the world.

Among the many insightful sessions, workshops, and technical tours, HoliSoils took centre stage in a dedicated symposium on drivers and processes of Soil CO₂, CH₄, and N₂O emissions in forested peatlands. Boris Tupek organised this ‘HoliSoils session’ together with Raisa Mäkipää, Tuula Larmola, Qian Li, Eduardo Martínez García from Natural Resources Institute Finland (LUKE).

Forested peatlands serve as substantial carbon sinks, yet they also act as sources of greenhouse gases (GHGs), releasing CO₂, CH₄, and N₂O. Understanding the drivers and processes behind these emissions is essential for predicting how climate and land-use changes will affect GHG balances and the role of forested peatlands in mitigating climate change. This ‘HoliSoils session’ brought together empirical and modeling studies focused on the mechanisms influencing GHG emissions from forested peatlands. The symposium gathered contributions investigating the factors driving these emissions, including environmental drivers, disturbance effects, management methods, biogeochemical processes and microbial contributions.
