Strengthening collaboration: HoliSoils at the 2025 LULUCF Workshop

Policymakers, members of the scientific community, and experts from the Land Use, Land Use Change and Forestry (LULUCF) sector met in Italy at the beginning of May for the 2025 edition of the annual LULUCF Workshop organised by the Joint Research Centre (JRC) and the European Environment Agency (EEA). The main goal of the workshop was to explore challenges related to greenhouse gas (GHG) reporting and accounting and to examine the scientific dimensions of long-term climate change impacts on carbon sinks.

HoliSoils has participated in previous editions of the workshop to strengthen the collaboration with experts from the LULUCF sector, which are among the projects’ main target stakeholders. Moreover, both JRC and EEA are active members of the project’s Stakeholder and End-User Advisory Board (SEAB), which actively participate in HoliSoils’ activities and provide key feedback to improve project’s results.

Once again in 2025, HoliSoils was invited to present the project and its latest results. Eduardo Martínez García (Luke) joined the workshop to discuss how strategies for soil carbon sequestration and GHG mitigation can contribute to sustainable forest management. He also highlighted the content of the policy briefs published by HoliSoils so far.

The event also showcased the development and results of other research projects that often cooperate with HoliSoils. Hans Verkerk (EFI), also a partner in HoliSoils, presented the ForestPaths project, of which he is coordinator. Pathfinder, ForestNavigator, NextGenCarbon, and AVENGERS were among the other initiatives which joined the event.
